Tyree Allenbrand: The point of TiVo, the company, is to own DVR patents and license them to ther DVR manufacturers, or the TiVo software and hardware to DVR manufacturers or providers, or end users with the TiVo hardware. In any of them, TiVo's business model is to receive ongoing license revenue for the patents or software, rather than one time payments. The standaone TiVo is an end to that means of receiving that ongoing revenue. With the standalone TiVo you basically own the hardware, so are not tied to one provider or need to return it.Back when they began few providers had DVRs, so they filled that niche well, for the more techy people anyways. As more providers got DVRs, TiVo reigned, as they were still better than them, and in some cases still are.In recent years, TiVo has been getting providers to have their DVRs, and including access to a number of online content sources on their end user DVRs, and integrated digital tuners for antenna and cable (meaning no boxes n! eeded for those sources, but conversely, the HD model TiVos ca! nnot use any box source)....Show more
Branden Roddick: Unfortunately you're right. It's very hard to justify the cost of a Tivo + the subscription fee when all other TV providers include a DVR and service with most of their subscription packages. That said there is still a small market for Tivo.Tivo will work with cable TV providers and will replace your cable box. You will, however, have to obtain a cablecard from your cable provider which often carries its own fee (the cable companies don't want you getting off scott-free that easily...) Tivo will also work with a plain over-the-air antenna.Tivo also has the ability to stream Netflix and several other sources, so it can also replace a dedicated set-top box like the Roku. However Tivo's main saving grace is that it's STILL the best DVR out there. I just don't understand why the other companies are having so much trouble producing a DVR that's even half as flexible, reliable and robust as the Tivo. Heck I can crash! my Dish DVR at will. Dish Customer Service knows it, and has submitted bug reports on my behalf. It's been nearly 4 years and many of these issues still exist. At least they fixed the problem with adding a 26th show entry will crash the DVR. We used to have an old series 1 Tivo (circa 2000) and easily had about 40 entries on it. Oh yeah, it would get a bit slow whenever you messed with the TV schedule but it didn't crash, nor did it ever drop a recording. We recently replaced my in-laws Series 2 Tivo with the newest Premiere model. This allows for recording in HD and has the newer ATSC tuners so it will work with their basic cable subscription even after the company goes all-digital. The total cost was about $500 - including the onetime, lifetime subscription fee. This is actually the cheaper option for them, since they don't have nor do they want, the larger channel packages from their cable provider that would provide them with a DVR....Show more
Coy Tapley:! >What is the point of Tivo?Tivos are very nice DVRs and they can downl! oad & video from Netflix and other internet providers. They exist because enough people feel that they are superior enough that they are worth the extra cost. >so you would only need one box Why would their be extra clutter? With the latest Tivo you only need a cable card from the cable company. And if you want to get Netflix & similar things, it's built in to the Tivo so you don't need an extra box for that either..Also the latest Tivo will work with digital antenna signals, which your cable company DVR will not do. Some people drop their cable service and go with antenna + Internet sources....Show more
