Virgil Menefee: Neither candidate has made this a priority issue. Obama says all of the right things but has no voting record in this regard. McCain has a significant voting record, some of which is protective of natural and wild lands, but his pandering to the slash-and-burn, profit-now right during recent months has compromised his credibility as a problem-solving political maverick in the Teddy Rooslevelt mold. Unless land is set aside by law in perpetuity to protect its natural or wild character, it will eventually be exploited for some "higher" economic purpose. Such laws are opposed by developers and mining interests, both of whom are powerful lobbies. Neither candidate has indicated a willingness to take either on directly....Show more
Kizzy Hett: Sorry i keep writing, just trying to respond to the answers I get. thanks for those who have responded. I want to ask though, what ARE obama's stances on conservation? i dont give a f*ck about global warming. so ! leave that out of the conversation. up to this point i havent been able to figure out where obama stands on all other environmental issues. also does obama want to make hunting illegal? i heard somewhere that he wanted to end this and personally i couldn't vote for obama if he beleives this...Show more
Loise Mausser: The principle difference between Obama and McCain is Obama only represents himself; he suffers from acute Delusions of Grandeur, while McCain represents America.Drilling in the ANWR wonât amount to a hill of beans from an environmental standpoint. ANWR is a big place the oil drilling area is a small corner. It is not pristine territory as the environmentalists want you to believe. It is mile after mile of nothing. When you start talking about environmental issues you are talking about something about which Obama knows nothing. His handlers have to tell this dud what to say.In reality, we must start looking for and developing other energy sources. We nee! d another fifty or sixty nuclear power plants as a beginning. ! The oil we find will be just to tide us over until we come up to speed on the alternate energy sources. Coal burning power plants should be phased out in the long term as the nuclear plants come on line.America should stop listening to Obama. The man is a phony from stem to stern.Obama can be the worse thing to happen to America for the next 200 years. McCain may be the next worse, but he won't come close to Obama....Show more
Brian Marquina: Someone said McCain wanted to drill in the arctic national wildlife refuge. I wanted to correct that person and say that he does support drilling offshore, but does not support it in the ANWR. Still i'd rather not have that but it's two totally different areas. Also, i know that the current bush structure wouldn't support McCain's conservation efforts, but you don't think that McCain could sweep it clean and get new people into those positions and get rid of the bushies? I mean this is a really important issue to me but i really ! dont want to have to embrace barack obama and socialism to preserve the environment. if youre an obama supporter please dont give me any of this propaganda just to try and get me to vote for him , i want straight talk here. thanks...Show more
Jed Porada: McCain would also drill in ANWR and other protected sites. It's quite difficult to conserve something if it's covered in miles of pipe-lines and a couple of derricks.
Forest Duttinger: The League of Conservation Voters has endorsed Obama for President. Check out their website:http://www.lcv.org/ Their endorsement was based on his energy policy, which was not the basis of your question, but they also address issues of land conservation as well.ADDITION:I appreciate your intelligent inquiry....really I do...seeing all the other stupid questions on this site. However, I don't understand your comments about socialism. I don't think Obama is advocating a policy of division of wealth, but of the opportunity for al! l Americans to be able to earn a living. Even his health care plan doe! s not advocate a government paid plan but the opportunity for Americans to pay for health insurance according to what they can afford. Why don't you look at his website? It's www.barackobama.com. Also, look at www.votesmart.org. Vote Smart is a non-profit organization that collects information about candidates voting records, speeches, fund raising, etc. I find them extremely helpful.Another addition:Here's a link to the issue of land conservation:http://www.barackobama.com/issues/rural/The issue you are interested in is about 1/2 way down the page. And here's a link to his comment on hunters, etc:http://www.barackobama.com/issues/additional/#spor...This link is even better:http://www.barackobama.com/issues/additional/Obama......Show more
Elinore Schlinker: The best case here is that Barack Obama is elected president and John McCain returns to his old roll as the last of the Eisenhower republicans. In that roll McCain can bring up these conservation issues....issu! es that I'm sure that Obama will embrace. A 'president' McCain will be assaulted at every turn by the 'profit at any price' power structure of the current GOP. Just because the Bush Junta is going back to Texas won't mean that the same party structure is going to go with it. All of those people have to go. A new broom sweeps clean and God knows we could use a radical housecleaning. No kiddin'!...Show more
Bibi Tyron: You write alot, but you sound like a troll. There is no way if you are for any type of environment you vote for McCain. It is absurd on it's face. Mcain uses oil and corporate lobbyists to run his campaign. Also, how many times does a Republican with oil and corporate ties get elected President does it take? I mean this is barely even a serious consideration, which makes me think you are a McCain supporter just trying to talk some people on the fence to join McCain, thinking that McCain is like Teddy Rosevelt. Teddy Rosevelt? Come on! Look, Dems get ! their money from teachers unions, Republicans from oil companies. Now w! ho do you think is going to 'protect' the open areas?...Show more
Mauro Cowee: Obama has no record on the environment he hasn`t been around long enough. Only Democrat talking points which quite frankly are pie in the sky. Remember the Federal (Democrat) conservation practices burned down half the west and closed the grand canyon for lack of money. So McCain should get it as he has a long record of voting to preserve the land in the senate and Arizona. However he is not stupid and managed to save most of our forests from catastrophic fires by going against the prevailing theories of land management at the time. As a former Arizonian I can say he did a good job. Teddy started the national park system with a bang.Glad you asked...Show more
Antonia Quinnett: I saw that league of conservation voters endorsement. I mean obama sounds good but he doesn't explain anything.... he just answers all those questions "yes", "no", etc. McCain actually talks about what he plans o! n doing and how he wants to preserve the nation's natural lands. Climate change doesnt matter as much to me but it's a big issue to obama and I'm concerned that obama may only focus on that but not do anything about protecting species and natural lands, etc. I know i have a unique problem here. I am concerned about the environment but don't want socialism and Obama. Do y'all think that McCain would be "bad" with environment, or do you just think obama would be better?I know that McCain is a lot more concerned with the environment than Bush, but the question is can he replace the current GOP structure in washington that was put into place by bush....Show more
