Both were famous, but their fame has declined by a lot since their deaths. And if "too famous" = canon, their works probabilty fit the requirements....Show more
August Hubbard: Tell us a little more about what you think is interesting or if you have other criteria. Cannery Row by John Steinbeck is reasonably short, set in a blue collar district with colorful charactes struggling to survive. Of Mice and Men is the usual choice of his. Silver Kiss by Annette Klause is a bit longer than you specified but is a more contemporary book. Vampires but not Twilight; a modern semi-classic, I suppose you could say as it has started showing up on school reading lists. Zoe's mother is dying and she feels isolated in her grief; she's drawn to Simon and becomes entangled in a search for vengenc! e. Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is another short classic. Set during the American Civil War. Most of the good ones I can think of tend to run longer than 200 pages-- Monster by Walter Dean Myers, To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, etc....Show more
