Will a class A misdemeanor affect employment?

Tom Romer: Straight up: Yes. An employer may use convictions on a record to determine employment, depending on the particular conviction, how long ago it was, and how many times it has happened before.I had an employer who would normally hire an employee if he had a conviction for "X," or maybe for "Y," and of course, maybe for "Z." However, when they found out that they had been convicted of "X, Y, & Z" just 5 months ago, and within a few days apart, they refused them the job....Show more

Betsey Muehlbach: From what I've found, you'll be fine. Most companies only care if you have felonies or any jail time.

Madie Strople: Glen - Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, I did plead guilty and did not seek any legal advice. My current employer only looks for felonies as well, and that's why I have my position. However, when I'm done with school, I will be applying for posit! ions in the medical field, and am worried they will look more in depth than other employers.

Erin Arron: Here is an important question for you, Janet: What was the disposition of the case? Were you ever convicted on this charge? I'm assuming you went to court for this charge based on the fact that it was a class A misdemeanor. When you got there, did you at any time plead guilty? Or did you request a trial and were found guilty either by a judge or a jury? When I worked in HR (for a non-profit health care organization, btw), we contracted a service to do criminal background checks on all potential new-hires (not all applicants, because that is too expensive, just as the last step before hiring someone). However, this service only looked for felony convictions. Most workplaces are the same, that is, only interested in felony convictions. In this regard, you are safe; your crime, whether you were convicted or not, was only a misdemeanor. However, it all depends on what ! the job application asks you. That brings me back to my quest! ion for you. If you were never found "Guilty", you can honestly answer "No" to any questions that ask you if you have "ever been convicted of any crime". However, it depends on what the disposition of the case was, and exactly what the application asks you. If you lie on the application, that will result in your immediate rejection, or immediate termination if already hired.I feel that there is more to this than what you are presenting, but that's the best answer I can give based on the face of your question....Show more

Ezekiel Kadner: I didn't get around to paying a speeding ticket which resulted in my license getting suspended. Then got pulled over and was given a misdemeanor. Never been arrested. Clean criminal history. Will this affect me getting a job at a childcare facility ?????
