Penelope Armond: You cannot rent an aircraft to others without commercial insurance (since you'd be a business) and they'll nick you for at least $6,000 a year for that, payable in full up front. When you add in operating costs, maintenance, maintenance "reserve" (money set aside toward future engine and accessory overhauls), unscheduled repairs, tie-down fees and miscellaneous expenses, you'll end up having to charge as much as the local flight school does, and they probably have a newer, better equipped, better maintained aircraft. It's doable, but you really have to crunch the numbers to see if it's workable. To insure it just for yourself and a named instructor, you'll probably pay around $2,000 give or take a couple hundred. After you get your private pilot certificate the rates will probably drop about 40%. If you push on and get your instrument rating! too, then the insurance cost might drop to around $1,000 annu! ally, or even a bit less. These are just ballpark figures based on my own airplane and will depend on the value of the aircraft and the underwriter who insures it. To get some accurate figures, call AVEMCO or a similar aviation insurer for a quote. They'll need details about the airplane including registration, age, installed equipment and value.
