How do demo or remodel a small regular bathroom?

Barrett Felicia: Remodeling a bathroom is way more work than you can imagine.Professional re-modelers often need a minimum of 3 days and I have seen jobs take a week or more.Get several more estimates as the difference between the first one (what did they miss?) and the other two worries me.The possibility of injury is quite high. Broken porcelain is sharp as a scalpel and tile is nearly so. No to mention the dust and more than likely mold you will stir up.Removing the sink and toilet should be simple enough if you have shut-off valves that don't leak. You didn't mention if you have a tub or not. I had a professional resurface mine 8 years ago and it still looks like new. Well worth the cost.At $20/hr I would hire him in a minute if I was confident in his experience. As to "helping him". He may set you up to do some demo work after he leaves at the end of the day. But otherwise you will likely be limited to removing debris as he creates it. Maybe some sanding between coats.! Unless you are quite proficient at setting tile hire a professional!!! Straight and level with even spacing makes all the difference between an "OK" job and a "WOW, would ya look at that!" job. Good chance you will need to replace a lot of "dry wall" with the new style green board or such. Possibly some of the flooring as well.Do a lot of research and pricing before you start. Get a detailed estimate in writing before you start. Make every effort to stay with your budget but don't be surprised if you go over. It happens all the time. I speak from personal experience!...Show more
