Why can't I get sound from my tv through my home theater system?

Shawn Lelis: Amy - These other guys obviously don't know what to do. I apologize for them and their bad advice.YOU NEVER HOOK UP AN HTS SYSTEM FROM THE TV OUTPUT!!!THE TV DOES NOT PROCESS SURROUND SOUND AND ALL YOU ARE GETTING IS 2 CHANNEL (LEFT &RIGHT) SOUND. THE RECEIVER IS CONFUSED AND CAN'T PROCESS IT. THE RED AND WHITE CABLES...COME ON GUYS. THAT MEANS RED IS ONE CHANNEL AND WHITE IS ONE CHANNEL. THERE IS NO CENTER, REAR OR SUBWOOFER CHANNELS BEING SENT TO THE RECEIVER.First of all your cable box needs to be new enough to have multiple outputs for different hook ups. If it only has coax going out to the TV you are hosed? Then you need to upgrade your cable box. You should have the right one since you are using a 42" LCD HD TV. It should be like this - Cable box output goes to the HTS using component cables or an HDMI cable. The HTS decodes the audio and sends it to the speakers in surround (if the broadcast is in 5.1) Then the video goes to the TV using either an HDM! I cable, component cables (red, blue, green) from the HTS or a separate digital optical cable from the cable box. Anyway...the only way you should have this hooked up is wall > cable box > home theater > TVBasic setup principals for Home Theater is everything runs to the HTS first and then out to the TV. EDIT > I just looked up your HTS and it has everything you need to hook it up right. Now you just need to check on the back of the cable box. It would be best not to use the coax but if that is all it has then you are stuck with it. Run that line into the HTS coax input. Then go the superstore and get an HDMI cable to run from the HTS to the TV. Don't buy the one that is $70 bucks. They are just ripping you off. Buy the cheapest one they have...just make sure it is long enough to reach from the back of the HTS to the back of the TV. Plug it in and then switch the TV to the correct input setting (your TV will have several input modes depending on which HDMI port you plugged i! t into you will need to switch the TV input mode to that plug ! number. Should be on the remote control. Again, your cable box should be HD compatible since you have an HD TV or you need to upgrade to HD cable to fully enjoy the TV and surround sound.Good luck...Show more

Davina Shindler: Amy - The basic way to do this is to connect the red/white audio output from the TV to the home theater unit with a red/white RCA cable. To hear the TV, you would then select "TV" on the home theater system. If your TV does not have red/white audio outputs then use the red/white audio output on the cable box and connect that to the home theater. Either way, that should work.My answer may not be the best answer if you are technical but I sensed from your question that you wanted a simple solution. Sometimes simple works just fine. My solution will work fine and give you sound from your TV....Show more

Frederic Engellant: It sounds to me like your system is connected wrong, or I am at least ! not understanding how it is connected. I see from the SonyStyle website that it has 2 inputs capable of carrying digital sound. Those are the Coaxial Audio Digital Input & Optical Audio Inputs. This home theatre can do Dolby Digital... but if you just connect the red and white jacks, all that goes to waste and you have stereo only.I know nothing of your cable box, but virtually all of them have at least one of these types of outputs. I'd do a google search to educate yourself on what those outputs look like and then I'd look on your cable box to see what you have. It will require that you purchase a cable that you apparently do not have, but they are fairly cheap. The just run this new cable between your cable box and your HTS.http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet......Show more

Davida Gisriel: nicely sounds such as you have A SPAGHETTI DINNER at the back of YOUR SET. THERE could desire to be AN OUTPUT on your television FOR SOUND, this is that if ITS a g! reater modern-day SET, you could desire to ROUT all your SOUND via YOUR! television AND HOOK YOUR television to your TUNER. THAT way each and all the SOUND YOU GET IS out of your television quite than FROM THE field. this could desire to MAKE ALL SOUNDS EMMITED FROM the television available on your TUNER WHICH IN turn delivers encompass SOUND out of your television...Show more

Nia Monopoli: From your tv what audio connection are you using and connection to the home theater? You should use optical of coax from tv to home theater for sound, or from the cable box (optical or coax cable) to the home theater and then to tv. Most tv prgram are only in stereo, if it is in Dolby Surround then you will get surround sound with your home theater. Optical and coax cable are the only cable that will carry digital surround sound, RCA jacks are stereo only. Hope this helps.
